The Bad Habits that are Making You Look Older

September 20, 2017

Unless you happen to stumble upon the fountain of youth or you have exceptionally good genes, there’s no way to avoid the passage of time and the inevitable changes it brings to your body, but there is plenty you can do to stop looking old before your time.

If you’re serious about looking as youthful as you possibly can for as long as you can, you might not want to hear this, but there are a number of bad habits you’re going to have to give up for that wrinkle-free, fresh-faced complexion…

Saying No to Sunscreen

I know it can be a real pain to apply sunscreen every time you want to go outside, but if you don’t do it, not only could you end up with so many wrinkles that you end up looking like a piece of well-worn leather in a few years, but you could also end up sporting more than a few unwanted sun spots, and more importantly you might end up contracting skin cancer! So, slather that sunscreen on, even when it’s cloudy outside if you want to keep the wrinkles at bay.

Smoking

If you’re a smoker, the bad news is that your habits, as well as increasing your chances of a serious illness like cancer, is contributing to the premature aging of your skin causing you to have more wrinkles and prominent eye bags. If you keep smoking, you’re likely to end up looking ten years older than your non-smoking peers, and that’s not a look anyone wants!

The good news is that it’s never been easier to give up smoking thanks to Nicocig electronic cigarettes, which can help to wean you off the more harmful cigarettes at the very least. If you struggle to stop smoking, there are people who can help, so seek professional help, and don’t give up.

Holding Grudges

If you’re the kind of girl who can hold a grudge against your workmate for weeks just because they ate the last doughnut, you might want to work on your anger issues because holding onto grudges and anger can quite literally cause you to stiffen up and this can make it more difficult for your body to heal. Studies have shown that this can have an impact on cellular aging too, so your anger could quite literally be showing on your face.

Not Wearing Sunglasses

If you don’t put on your favourite pair of Ray-Bans every time you step out into the sun, you could be causing countless wrinkles to form around your eyes, which will, of course, make you look a lot older than you actually are. This happens because, when your eyes aren’t protected from the sun, you do a lot more squinting and this causes crow’s feet to form. It’s the perfect excuse to invest in a nice new pair of sunglasses!

Sleeping with Your Face on the Pillow

If you sleep on your back, chances are you have more of a youthful glow than your friends who sleep on their face. Why might that be you’re wondering? Well, let me tell you. When you sleep on your face regularly, lines form in your face, and after a long time, they can become permanent. You can mitigate this by sleeping on a smooth satin pillow, which won’t cause as many creases to appear on your face. However, sleeping on your back, if you don’t find it too uncomfortable, is the best way to deal with this particular issue.

Staring at Your Phone Screen

If you spend most of your waking hours starting at your phone screen, you could be making your neck look older than its years. You see, the skin on your neck is a lot thinner than the skin on your face, which means signs of aging will show up sooner there is you are doing the wrong things.

Unfortunately, the act of constantly staring down at the screen of your smartphone decreases the firmness of your neck and causes the skin to wrinkle. Eventually, these wrinkles will become permanent.

To combat this unfortunate condition, which has come to be known as tech neck, stop staring at your phone so much! If you can’t manage that, hold you phone yo as you look at it, so that your head is neutrally positioned and your neck taught.

Eating a Dodgy Diet

If you are the junk food queen and if fruits and vegetables rarely make the cut on your plate, your skin is not going to look as clear and radiant as it could. Eating lots of sugar, fat, salt and alcohol will dehydrate the skin, effect the production of collagen and elastin, which are vital for healthy skin and potentially cause breakouts.

Your skin needs lots of water and the kinds of vitamins and minerals found in healthy fruits, vegetables, and whole grains if it is to effectively repair itself and maintain a youthful glow and if you don’t feed it these things, you will look old before your time.

A Lax Skincare Regime

If you want to look younger for longer, then you really do need to have a good skincare regime in place, and you need to follow it rigidly to see the best results. As a minimum, you should be washing and cleansing your face at least twice a day, moisturising daily and exfoliating on a regular basis. If you don’t do this, your skin will not only be dirty, but it will start to lose elasticity, which will lead to wrinkles.

Faking Your Bake

If you’re a tanning salon fan, you might want to have a rethink because the only thing that is worse for your skin than going out in the sun unprotected is using sunbeds with wild abandon. The UV rays produced by these machines will do untold damage to your skin, and although you might have a healthy grow right now, in years to come, you’ll be dealing with excessive wrinkles and possibly even skin cancer.

By making a few simple changes to your lifestyle, you can maintain your youthful good looks for longer. You just have to take the first step.
